New York-based artist STEFA* spent nine years writing their noteworthy debut album, Born With An Extra Rib. This dedication, augmented by their background as a multi-genre, multi-disciplinary artist (the album comes with a 40-minute accompanying film), has yielded a beautiful exploration of STEFA*’s inner world, where identity clashes with the post-colonial world and speaks to a profound search for oneself. This pursuit is reflected in boundary-pushing tracks that draw equally from Caribbean rhythms, punk, and avant-pop, creating a vibrant portrait where rage and softness both have a place. Choral arrangements (“How Do I Cope?”) and huge vocals that soar into experimental jazz territories (“negra, revisited”) make for an unpredictable listen, restless and enchanting.
